Why is there all this hype on bruce lee?? I understand his rep as traininer and all, and he was great for martial arts, but he weighed around 150, never did any ground training, and never competed in a fight against any real competition. He won some kung fu matches and some AMATUER boxing matches… I just hate seeing this day after day…Jeet kun Do is a great art and all but all it really is is striking first, no real genius there.
IAfter several replies i just want to say i fully respect what Bruce did and his accomplishments…But to ask questions as to if he could beat fighters that are the best at what they do now a days and outweigh him by 70 to 100+ pounds is a stupid question. I stated the ground game part because of how important it is in fighting….and if you have no ground game there is a high chance youll get taken down and speed of hands from the bottom means next to nothing.
First I must say that I remember when Bruce Lee Died. I had been involved with training in the martial arts for some years then. I too am getting a little tired of who can beat who. Many of the people who keep bringing up Bruce Lee were not even born when he was alive. There are to many rumors and assumptions about him. Yes he was a great martial artist, but to say that he was the most powerful, the fastest, …etc. can't be backed up with facts. I trained for a short time with one of his original students during 1975 (Larry Hartsell). We had several talks about Bruce Lee. what I was told was much different from what many people are saying.
And does anyone have any facts to back up the claim that Lee had no ground training? That is a new one for me. As far as I know he did have ground training. Perhaps people have gotten that idea that he did not from his movies. In real life his fighting techniques were much different from what he did in the movies.

I hate the questions for being here (They should be surveys), but you've got a big misconception of JKD. It isn't an art: It's a philosophy. JKD as an art is really a misnomer, that should be Jun Fan Kung Fu.
And so what if he didn't train in groundfighting? He advocated ground training as part of "Combat ranges," and he did train in grappling arts.

While I would like to say that you just don't get it…I don't get it either. I think Bruce Lee was remarkable but today the martial arts and MMA are more acccessible to people than in Lee's time. I think that there are more accomplished athletes these days. Also, I am firm believer that the more proficient fighter will always win, regardless of the technique.

His weight was 135,LBS. He was the fastest man alive.
To back up the last statement they speed up the punches on most people but they had to slow his on film to show his blows. his striking force is or has not yet been matched by a person of his weight ETC.
The last thing I have 2 say is that if he did not start teaching
Kung FU as he did to all the Chinese would not yet be teaching the Art to any one except them selves.

agreed.
bruce lee contributed a lot to martial arts mostly by promoting full contact sparring at a time when it was less emphasized.
and he promoted the idea to use WHAT WORKS FOR YOU (hardly a new idea- I can trace it back as far as ancient rome, maybe someone with some prior period historical knowledge can trace it farther).
jeet kun do is NOT a striking style, in order for it to be a striking style it would need to be a style in the first place.
jkd is a philosophy. the philosophy of USING WHAT TECHNIQUES WORK FOR YOU.
by definition that idea (even if it predates bruce lee by millenia) is the basis for modern day mixed martial arts competitions. fighters need to be proficient in fighting in multiple ranges from multiple arts.
bruce lee even said in his tao of jeet kun do to let jkd die if anyone ever thinks of it as a style.
people just use it to get some quick marketing and to thier credit however, do teach some form of kickboxing, so its not like they are making stuff up or students aren't learning anything worthwhile, its just unscrupulous adds to sell a potentially decent product (depends on the teacher).
EDIT: no walter c, the flash is the fastest man alive, no one else.

it is very easy to sit back nearly forty years after the fact and say that there was or is no genius behind what Bruce Lee did. I for one feel that if Bruce were alive today he would be as proficient a fighter as any around today. I am also amazed to see you you use his weight as a point of contention he was amazing and i have seen smaller guys whip up on bigger guys for years. This is kind of like comparing an old time ballplayer ie: Babe Ruth to modern players there are too many different variables, just appreciate the fact that without Bruce i do not think that martial arts would be as popular worldwide as they are. today.

All of the hype about Bruce Lee comes from the fact that he was one of the greatest martial arts innovators in recent times. Bruce came up with the idea of using whatever works. He also came up with the 4 ranges of fighting, and the philosophy of blending like water to an attack and intercepting your opponent's attack. A lot of martial artists wonder how he would have fared against other great fighters. I know that sooner or later he would have lost a fight and that would have propelled him to get better until he reached an age where he was better off instructing than fighting. He may have gone on to train some great Mixed Martial Artists, but we'll never know. Bruce Lee's fighting philosophy saved me as I actually used Jeet Kun Do Concepts in a real fight. I love where Paul Vunak, Tony Blauer, and Burton Richardson have taken JKD Concepts. They have studied JKD Concepts and applied it to the real life fight-or-flight response that you experience when your mind knows you're in danger. Your heart races up to 170 beats per minute and all technique goes out the window. It's called Hick's Law. Without studying JKD Concepts I may not have known how to defend myself when I experienced Hick's Law and I was in trouble in real street fights.

people get mixed up with saying this is better than that , but the truth is is that theres pors and cons of every style of fighting, and i have no idea why people are always putting questions on here like "could bruce lee beat so-and-so" people forget that the movies are not like real life, he was a good fighter but theres a lot of good fighters on earth..

First he was like 135 lbs.
second you don't know sh!t about what Bruce lee trained in.
in his book the Tao of jeet kune do there are sections upon sections of grappling. for position and submission. even in one of his movies he wins a fight with an arm bar. chuck Norris and him were stand up and ground sparring partners. I think close to what you think. maybe good in his weight class or maybe not just let the man rest in piece!

For your last question, that is something we will never know, Bruce lee is dead (more the shame for that happening) and if he were alive he would be around 60 or 70 years old and well past his prime.
